Extended stay rentals are useful in a number of scenarios, from vacation to business travel and many life moments in between. A common question people ask is how long can you stay at extended stay rentals?
As it turns out, the answer can vary based on whether you’re at a traditional hotel or apartment and what company you choose to go with. But in the simplest terms: you can typically stay as long as you want. We’ve put together our guide to cover that question in detail and more, so you can go into your next extended stay feeling empowered and filled with knowledge!
Before we cover how long can you stay at extended stay rentals, let’s sort through some of the finer details (like exactly what is an extended stay).
Both extended stay hotels and extended stay apartments offer long term accommodations and are set up to support someone staying for longer than your typical hotel stay of a few nights. Some extended stay hotels and apartments support short-term stays, too, even though they’re designed for longer-term trips. They’re rented for a variety of reasons, and typical extended stay apartments host:
Whether you’re vacationing for an extended time, relocating for work, or on-assignment with a job, an extended stay rental offers convenience, flexibility, and affordability. Both extended stay hotels and extended stay apartments offer a hotel-meets-vacation-rental vibe. Both options vary based on your traveler needs so start off with a list full of every amenity you wish to have during your long term stay.
There are a handful of amenities that each different temporary housing solutions offer. One of the most important questions to ask when renting an apartment or hotel is what amenities each specific location has. From there, you can decide what’s the best fit for you.
Now that you’re more familiar with the basics of extended stay rentals, let's figure out how long can you stay at an extended stay hotel vs. an extended stay apartment.
If you’re going to be in an area for more than a few days, extended stay hotels are more cost-effective than traditional hotels. In general, the rooms will be larger (often suites), most will have kitchens, and there will be some nice amenities to choose from. We often hear people asking how long can you stay in an extended stay hotel, and typically, you can stay as a hotel guest for as long as you need.
When you’re going this route, it’s a good idea to discuss your options with the general manager. Most extended stay hotels will offer a substantial discount for long term stays. If you’re planning to stay 2 or more months you may be able to negotiate a deal for your extended stay accommodations.
Keep in mind that hotel living isn’t for everyone. You typically have less space than in an apartment rental, and other guests are in close proximity to you. But it does offer some nice perks—complimentary breakfast, an outdoor pool and hot tub, business meeting room, laundry facility, and a friendly staff on-site to help you out.
Here are some of the most popular options for extended stay hotels in America and some more info about each one.
At most InTown Suites locations you can stay for as long as you’d like. They offer numerous rate options to add to customer convenience. After the first week, if you want to stay longer, extend your stay by the week or use their “Stay-Over Rate” to extend your stay for less than a week.
Extended Stay America can be found throughout the country and is used by both business professionals and family travelers. If you plan to stay 30 days or more, you can enjoy lower long-term rates that may save you 30% or more. To find the weekly rate, search for rates on hotel rooms for seven or more consecutive nights, and your discounted nightly rate will automatically appear.
Homewood Suites by Hilton is an all-suite, extended-stay brand. In their words, they offer “the comforts of home whether you stay two nights or two months.”
TownePlace Suites by Marriott are spacious with full kitchens. When asking how long can you stay at an extended stay hotel, TownPlace says, “Whether you’re staying with us for the night, weekend, month or longer, [we’re] designed to provide everything you need to live life uninterrupted.” As a fun bonus, they offer complimentary hot breakfast and free WiFi. They also have something called the ultimate Weber® grilling experience for the grill aficionados in the family.
Also by Marriott, the Residence Inn boasts modern, flexible suites that are perfect for your extended stay accommodations. They’re known as a long-stay hotel that’s still filled with everything you need to feel comfortable. If you’re considering this option, narrow down your location then speak with a manager about potential extended stay rates.
Home2 Suites by Hilton is known as a mid-tier extended-stay travel option. They have expanded spaces and boast a more “forward-thinking extended-stay experience”. If this spot catches your interest, make sure to speak with someone at the hotel about any special rates they offer (what is temporary housing without some sort of deal, after all).
If you’re more inclined to go for an extended stay apartment than a hotel, you’re not alone. Extended stay apartments give a home-away-from-home type of feeling. Venturing into a residential building is a way different ball game then heading into a hotel lobby.
But the type of stay that’s right for you truly depends on what sort of experience you’re searching for. If the idea of venturing to the local market, filling your fridge, and truly settling into a space as if it’s your own is appealing, extended stay apartments are a wonderful option for a frequent business traveler. The average length of stay in an apartment can vary, depending on the company, so it’s always important to do your research before booking.
Here are some of the more popular options for extended stay apartments and a little bit about what you can expect from each one.

Fully furnished homes with Airbnb can be rented monthly in over 65,000 cities. Long-term rentals and sublets are considered those that last anywhere from 28 days to six months. With Airbnb, it’s important to keep in mind that different cities have different rules for long term tenants.
At Zeus Living, the average length of stay in an apartment is 2-4 months. Our minimum stay length in all cities is 30 nights and we specialize in medium-term stays. This means that our homes are set-up with what you’ll need to stay for 30+ days, with kitchen essentials, basics like an iron and hangers, and quality linens in the bathroom and bedroom.
If you do want to stay with Zeus beyond your end date, we ask that you notify us as quickly as possible (so that we don’t book someone else on those days). We book on a first-come, first-serve basis, which means we can’t extend you if we’ve booked another resident for those dates.
With us, you can also choose a flexible lease option. These leases don’t have a specific end date, we just ask that if you’d like the lease to end, you give us at least a 30 days notice.
Now that you know how long can you stay at extended stay, we hope you’ll move forward with trying them out. We know the finer details of extended stays can feel overwhelming at first and that your head’s most likely spinning with details of turnkey rental information, how to pack for a long trip, and which city to call your home.
That’s why we try to make things as easy as possible for our guests. We’re convenient. We’re flexible. And we’re always here to help.
