In this edition, we connect with Esme Martinez, Inbound Sales Lead. Esme joined Zeus Living in 2019 and supports the resident experience. Read on to learn more about Esme and what led her to Zeus.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in California—Orange County, Santa Ana, Costa Mesa, and the Garden Grove area. My family moved a lot.
You’ve lived in a lot of areas. Did moving around give you a new perspective on living?
It did! Each community gave me insight into how other people lived. Coming from a low-income family, moving around also showed me the possibility of success.
Tell us what ‘home’ means to you
Zeus has actually reshaped my idea of home. Before Zeus, I never thought about interior design or having a comfortable space. I always hear residents compliment our homes, which has empowered me to say “hey, I deserve a nice home. I deserve a space where I feel comfortable and safe.”
So I reached out to my friends at Zeus to learn more about interior design, and now, I’ve transformed my home into a place where I feel safe, comfortable, and relaxed. It’s my personalized space!
Give us the scoop. What design tips did you learn from friends at work?
(Laughing) They recommended I keep my space neutral but encouraged adding a bit of color and small accent pieces to tie everything together. They also told me to choose a color palette for my home, which I never thought of!
You moved around a lot in your younger years, but how would you describe your lifestyle now?
I’d say I live a hybrid of mobile and traditional. I’m less traditional now because we’re working remotely and have the opportunity to live wherever. But my partner and I decided to settle down in San Diego and buy a house. Our dream is to transform some of our space into a rental so we can continue to travel, and in turn, encourage other people to live a nomadic lifestyle.
Of all the places you’ve lived, which is your favorite?
San Francisco! It’s a very special city to me. It opened my eyes to different lifestyles, taught me to live on my own, and showed me how to connect and network with others on my path—like my coworkers at Zeus.
That’s a great transition to your experience at Zeus Living. How long have you worked here?
I’ve been at Zeus for a little over two years, and (laughing) it’s been a wild ride.
Tell us a little about what you do.
I’m a team lead in bookings. I support customers during the booking process, help them find the right home, and work on improving our resident experience.
Bookings is a tight-knit team. We love finding ways to uplift each other and have fun—like choosing quirky Zoom backgrounds for our weekly meetings and planning team happy hours. Everyone’s outgoing and supportive, and I think that’s what makes it fun to work with our team.
Your team is a lot of fun! What led you to Zeus Living?
Before joining Zeus, I worked at Airbnb in an operations role. I stumbled across Zeus and was intrigued by the company’s mission and approach to flexible living.
I had been thinking about breaking into sales (I always thought I’d be good at, but never tried it), and I thought the opportunity at Zeus would help me gain that experience—turns out, I’m a pretty good salesperson! I learned that being a good salesperson is really about listening to what the customer is saying and then helping them find exactly what they’re looking for. It’s really about a human relationship and helping more than anything.
Everyone has their own routine. How do you like to start your workday?
Let’s see. I start with walking my dog (which has helped me get to know my new neighborhood!). And once I’m back home, I make a quick breakfast (usually avocado toast and iced coffee) and read news articles or scroll through social media. Social media fascinates me. I find it not only fun, but empowering and motivating.
So, you like to have fun. How do you manage your work-life balance?
Since we’re all working from home, it’s easy to fall into a habit of consistently working late, so work-life balance is something I’ve been focusing on. But to help, I’ve created tactics like taking small breaks throughout the day and scheduling activities like happy hour with friends or cooking dinner immediately after my workday.
That’s smart! Tell us what keeps you at Zeus Living?
The people. I genuinely can’t explain how great it is to have such awesome coworkers. To be transparent, our work can get stressful—we’re a startup so we all wear different hats. During the early days of the pandemic, I worked late hours, but the stress eased when I saw my team online working those late nights with me. It’s reassuring to know that we’re all on this mission together. That’s what’s nice about working at Zeus and is what keeps me here.
What’s something you want people to know about Zeus Living?
Zeus is incredibly active in raising awareness about mental health at work. I also appreciate that the company is committed to creating a safe environment and has made several anti-racism efforts, including facilitating educational workshops.
Esme, thank you so much for your time! Before we end, we’d like to ask you a few rapid-fire questions. Ready?
Let’s do it.
If you could switch homes for a month with someone, who would it be?
I’m not sure who it would be, but we have a property in Seattle that I’d love to live in. It’s beautiful!
High rise in the city or a cabin in the woods?
High rise in the city.
It’s 7 pm on a Friday night. What are you doing?
During the pandemic, I’m probably grilling or hanging around our bonfire. Otherwise, I’d be out having dinner or drinks with friends.
If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
Favorite social channel?
Right now, it’s between TikTok or YouTube.
Thank you, Esme!
