3 Ways to Improve Your Space: Tips From Our Designers

Our designers share tips and must-try tricks for making your space work for you.

Home is our foundation for life. It’s where we start every day, return every night, and, increasingly, where we spend most of our time. How we set up our homes reflects the way we set up our lives. But are we getting it right? We asked our team of expert designers, and they let us in on tips and best practices for maximizing our space—and designing a home that can serve all our needs.

Let’s get to it.

#1. Make it functional

Aesthetics are important, but in order to live your best life at home, the space has to function in a way that makes sense for how you intend to use it. Our designers are able to create functional spaces in Zeus homes by keeping our residents’ needs top of mind, adding multi-use furniture, and scaling the furniture and overall design to the size of the home.

“In order to make a living space more functional, focus on using multi-use furniture and decor pieces in your home. By using pieces that can serve multiple purposes, you can create flexibility within your space.”

Try these tips from our designers:

  1. Get a good feel for your space. Take in the size, layout, and any special features. This comes in handy when planning for furniture and designating meaningful areas in the space (we’ll talk more about this later).
  2. Think about how you’ll use the space. Will you use it for exercise? Family time? Crafting? All of the above?
  3. List what you’ll need to make the space work. If you live in a small space, but work from home, you should bring in items that serve multiple purposes. This could be as simple as using a lift-top coffee table in your living room. It can be a work surface and an extra dining surface, should you need it.

#2. Make room for your interests

Home is where we’re able to be ourselves and freely do the things we love. When we learned that a lot of our residents preferred cooking their own meals, our designers stocked our homes with cooking supplies, appliances, utensils, and drinkware to give them the opportunity to do the things that are important to them, like preparing home-cooked meals and hosting guests. Similarly, you can create spaces in your home to do the things that matter most to you.

“Designate areas in your space for hobbies or daily practices. This allows your home to be a place that stimulates your self-growth.”

Let’s try a quick exercise. Take a look at your space. Are there any designated areas for your hobbies? A separate place to retreat after a long day? If not, now’s the time to get creative and carve out a space or two where you can pour into yourself. Maybe it’s a cozy nook for reading or an extra room that you can repurpose for meditating or working out—whatever it is, it has to cater to you and your needs.

#3. Make it feel like you

This step is about making your space a reflection of you. In each Zeus home, our designers leave breathing room for residents to make an imprint in the space—it’s more meaningful when someone is able to add their personal touch.

“Incorporate elements that bring your identity into your living space.”

To avoid feeling like a stranger in your own home, our designers suggest bringing in items that spark joy. “Whether it’s a bouquet of fresh flowers from your local farmer’s market or a scented candle that reminds you of a special time, your identity should always be present in a way that feels familiar and comforting,” they told us. In fact, it’s those personal touches that allow us to be the best version of ourselves. Think about that one piece of artwork that motivates you to take on the day or that cozy blanket that keeps you calm. When you’re surrounded by all the things you love, you’ll feel like you’re in the place where you belong.

Improving your space is a small act that goes a long way. Taking the time to make your space functional, designating areas for hobbies, and adding personal touches are what make a space a home—and a safe space to just be you.
