Best Careers for Digital Nomads

The digital nomad life is exciting, but without a remote-friendly career, this lifestyle is just out of reach. Read on for our picks of career types perfect for living on the go.

For some of us, it’s a pipe dream: living wherever you want, not bound to a specific office in a specific city. But in the past year, living (and working) from anywhere has gotten a lot of attention. More people are doing it, and more people want to do it. Could it be for you?

While the idea of living on the go is exciting, this lifestyle only works if you have a career that allows you to freely live and work from anywhere. Luckily, there are plenty of remote-friendly careers that’ll make your switch to being a digital nomad that much easier.

Here’s our take on the best career types for digital nomads.

Digital Entrepreneur

Have creative ideas or a side-hustle that you’re ready to make full-time? Start your own business. Digital entrepreneurs create new business ventures using technology (or by creating new technology) to sell products or services. Although the job may seem glamorous, it takes dedication and commitment. In order to be successful, you may find yourself performing several roles within the company to meet the ultimate goal of ensuring your business runs properly.

Consultant

If you’ve gained a high level of experience in your field and want to share your expertise with others, consider consulting as a career path. A consultant is a specialist who’s paid to offer expert advice and strategies to businesses or individuals. Popular industries that seek consultants are finance, business, marketing, healthcare, and technology.

Accountant

Good with money? You may be interested in a career in accounting. An accountant prepares and analyzes a company’s financial records, and ensures the company is operating efficiently. You’ll be responsible for analyzing data, accessing finance reports, budget records, and making sure the company’s processes are compliant with accounting best practices.

Customer Service Representative

Customer service representatives are the first line of contact for customers—they handle customer complaints, process orders, and answer questions. They can do their job from anywhere, as they typically perform these tasks via phone, email, chat, or social media.

Writer

Writing careers are popular for digital nomads—as long as there’s WiFi, it can be done from anywhere. Being a writer calls for creativity, attention to detail, and strong communication skills. However, there are several types of writing and each requires a specific skill-set. If you have a knack for sales or persuasion, look into copywriting jobs. Content writing or fiction writing may appeal to you if you’re interested in informing or inspiring readers. And if you’re about stating the facts or making complex ideas digestible, consider non-fiction or technical writing.

Editor

Most editors enjoy writing, but would rather oversee the process. As an editor, you’ll fact-check, improve writing (check for spelling and grammar), call out inconsistencies in voice and tone, and make sure the writing is aligned with in-house guidelines and standards. You’ll typically find editor roles at newspapers, magazines, publishing companies, and media outlets.

Marketer

Have a passion for promoting brands? A career in marketing could be a great fit. While this job does not require a physical presence, it does call for creative thinking and an interest in executing strategies to attract customers and raise brand awareness. Consider roles like a brand manager, growth marketing manager, content marketing specialist, email marketer, or influencer marketing specialist for your next career.

Social Media Manager

If you know your way around social media platforms, like Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, Linkedin, and Facebook, you already have a foot in the door. Whether working for a marketing agency, in-house, or freelance, social media managers produce content that helps businesses promote their products and services through social media. Other responsibilities include developing strategies, writing and designing digital content, engaging and responding to comments, and analyzing performance.

Social Media Influencer

We know: this might be a long shot. But if you have a strong following on social media, it could be a career to consider. Social media influencers are people who have built a large online presence and reputation for their knowledge on a specific topic. Influencers are highly sought for their ability to create trends and sway their followers’ opinions and decision-making. Consistency is key when it comes to being a social media influencer—find your niche, create quality content, and post regularly on a social channel of your choice.

Programmer

A large portion of programmers in the U.S. work remotely. This role entails writing code for computer programs, websites, and apps, as well as maintaining and troubleshooting systems and software. While this role is popular, it is also technical and requires knowledge of these computer languages: Java, Python, Ruby, or JavaScript.

Website Developer

Website developers are responsible for creating and maintaining a website. This includes paying close attention to the website’s performance, speed, and traffic. Some developers take the lead in creating content for websites—although content creation is not required, you should be able to analyze user needs to ensure the site’s content, graphics, and architecture meet both the user and website owner’s goals.

Graphic Designer

Graphic designers make up a large percentage of digital nomads—the job is nearly 100% digital and can typically be done largely without an internet connection. Companies look to graphic designers to create a brand identity, collateral, and promotional materials. Outside of the corporate world, graphic designers tend to work for themselves—creating a variety of items from packaging to apparel. This career requires creativity, access to design software, and great attention to detail.

UX Designer

User Experience (UX) design is a relatively new field and focuses on making a product easy to use, appealing, and enjoyable. To be successful in this role, you’ll need skills rooted in empathy, creativity, and a bit of technical experience. UX designers spend a lot of time getting to know their audience through user and product research and interviewing. You should also be knowledgeable in information architecture, wireframing, visual design, and prototyping.
